Start with the wearing length
Chain length changes where the pendant sits and how it interacts with clothing or other chains. Measure an existing chain that sits correctly, or use a soft tape around the neck while accounting for the pendant drop.
Body size and styling preference make generic length charts only a starting point. Layered sets need enough separation to reduce overlap between clasps and pendants.
Match chain width to pendant scale
A large pendant can visually overpower a narrow chain, while an oversized chain may crowd a smaller pendant. Compare millimetre measurements rather than relying on close-up photographs, which can distort scale.
Request a mock-up or measurement drawing showing pendant width and height next to the proposed chain width. If a tennis chain is used, confirm whether the stated millimetres describe the stone, setting or complete link width.
Engineer the bail and movement
The bail opening must clear the chain’s widest point, including the clasp if the pendant is not permanently attached. It should also allow enough movement without exposing a weak or excessively thin connection.
For heavy pieces, discuss bail thickness, balance and whether a second connection point is appropriate. The pendant’s centre of gravity affects how it faces while worn.

Use weight targets to protect the design
A target weight helps define whether a piece is solid, hollow or lightweight. If the design must meet a budget, adjust dimensions and construction openly rather than allowing the finished piece to become unexpectedly thin.

Should the pendant pass over the chain clasp?+
Only if that is part of the intended design. Measure the clasp’s widest point and specify the required bail clearance before production.
Is chain width measured by the stone or the full link?+
Sellers may use different conventions. Ask for the complete outside width and, where relevant, the stone size separately.
Can a pendant be made lighter without changing its face size?+
Construction can sometimes be adjusted, but thickness, strength and long-term wear must be reviewed. Confirm whether the piece will be solid, hollow or open-backed.
